Do posture correctors actually work?

A shoulder brace lying on a dark surface

Posture correctors sell extremely well, and the reason is not mysterious. You put one on, your shoulders go back, and within a minute you feel better than you did. That experience is genuine. The question worth asking is what happens after you take it off — an hour later, and six months later.

Why they feel good

Two things are happening. The strap physically restricts one direction, which is a novel sensation for a body that has been in one shape all day, and novelty alone often reduces discomfort. And it acts as a constant reminder, which changes your behaviour for as long as you notice it. Neither of those is a scam. Neither is the same as a change in your body.

A brace is an excellent reminder and a poor teacher. It does the work for you, and your body is happy to let it.

What the studies find

Trials of shoulder braces and posture shirts tend to find small, short-term changes in how people stand while wearing them, and little that persists afterwards. The picture is consistent with what you would expect: an external support changes the position you are in without changing what you are capable of. Some studies report modest reductions in discomfort during use, which matters if you are uncomfortable — but that is symptom relief, not a fix.

  • Position while wearing it: changes, reliably
  • Position an hour after taking it off: largely unchanged
  • Strength and range of the upper back: unchanged
  • Discomfort during wear: sometimes better

The thing they cannot give you

The reason your shoulders round forward by three in the afternoon is not that they lack a strap. It is usually some combination of an upper back that no longer extends, a chest that has shortened around the working day, and muscles between the shoulder blades that have not been asked to do anything in years. A brace addresses none of those. It holds the outcome in place while leaving the cause exactly as it was.

Ten minutes a day of extension, rotation and a little strength work will outperform any strap within a month, and the result will still be there when you are not wearing anything at all. It is less convenient and considerably less marketable, which is roughly why it is not sold to you.
